A new study conducted by Arlington, Virginia-based research group Wakefield Research showed why Americans keep items that seem to clutter our lives.
Among the top reasons why a person chooses not to discard an item contributing to clutter are a) the item may be needed in the future (63%); b) the item has sentimental value (51%); c) the item could be sold eventually (26%); and d) to give the item as a gift (19%). Only 2% of respondents said they were too lazy to throw clutter away. When sharing a residence, clutter begins to add up and can even negatively impact a relationship. The study showed that 90% of Americans in a relationship said that if there would be no negative consequences, they would throw out some or most of their partners’ belongings.
